about

'& I Exist': Recorded and mixed on cassette in the late 1980s, this hypnotic song was written and recorded as an experiment. I wanted to write something with just two chords on the acoustic guitar and then to layer it with arrangements in the studio.

The story: Reflecting on my life when I experienced a sequence of astonishing events with no breathing space in between. It seemed to me that we didn't live just by independent choices, but through everyone we are connected to, and though fate itself.

Anecdote: In 1990 I bumped into Brian May (Queen) and gave him a cassette of this song asking for his opinion of my recording, as a producer. Several months later, he wrote me a letter, advising me to make my production more minimalist . He wrote that I had a 'really engaging' voice, and he was 'highly flattered to be consulted'. I am still flattered that he answered me at all. Unfortunately I didn't re-record the song so the same demo version is here warts and all.

The song was recorded at the West London Women's Music Project in the late 1980s with Felix Macintosh engineering and mentoring.

lyrics

'& I Exist' by Veronique Acoustique

If I could write a book and take a look
at what I've got to say for myself
that I exist & I exist through everyone I've known
The people I've loved, the people who died
and made me cry long inside
The ground where I lay, the sights that I've seen
like living through another's dream
Fact's stranger than fiction
Fortune strikes me every time
Still I exist and I exist through everyone I've known

A woman struggles to find happiness
and when she gets it next week she's dead
Another fails to take her own life, though she just wants to die
Fact's stranger than fiction
Fortune strikes me every time
Still I exist and I exist through everyone I've known

Situations come again
Time and time again
Sometimes I'm the giver
Sometimes the receiver
Situations come again
Time and time again
Sometimes the aggressor
Sometimes the victim

If I could write a book and take a look
at what I've got to say for myself
That I exist & I exist through everyone I've known
The people I've loved, the people who lied
and made me rage long inside
The people I've loved, the people who died
and left the whole world behind...
