about

'Thelma & Louise': This roughly recorded song was very popular with audiences, who used to sing along to the chorus when I sang it at Bunjies Coffee House Folk Cellar, London in the early 90s.

The song: the story is based on the film 'Thelma and Louise' but also from living freely out in the open, travelling around free festivals and other places in the early 1980s. The music was inspired by listening to Hendrix and blues.

Recording: on cassette tape in my living room with cheap equipment and a Tascam portastudio (expensive) in 1994. This song was then released on my Thelma and Louise cassette album (track 2) in 1995.

Anecdote: When I spent a week with Ray Davies (the Kinks) in 1999, he thought that I was specially talented in writing lyrics. I disagreed with him and said I just liked playing the guitar. But he referred to this song where he thought my lyrics were good.

Covers: A popular lively all female acoustic band 'The Wise Wound' (www.thewisewound.co.uk) loved this song and we recorded a wild 'live' version at their house. Don't know what happened to it!

lyrics

Thelma & Louise by Veronique Acoustique

Verse 1
Well she shakes her head and loosens up
Under a clear blue sky
The wind is rushing through her body
She screams and feels wide alive
She stays up and counts the stars at night
Reborn in a tree-lined sunrise

Chorus 1:
Yes she's got to run run free
Just like Thelma and Louise
No choice but to rebel
To rebel or live an urban routine hell
(Ah-ah etc.)

Verse 2
To her children she says:
'I'm sorry, I can't stay your housebound Mummy, (no,no)
and though I love you like nobody else,
can't sacrifice what is left of myself.'
And to her lover she says:
'I want you I need you
but you've put me down for too long
There's so many things
I need to be ,need to see,
without your lectures on who's right and who's wrong
and though it grieves me to leave you behind,
I've got to break the rules that quietly stole my mind'

Chorus 2:
'Yes I've got to run run free (free)
Just like Thelma and Louise
No choice but to rebel
to rebel or face an urban routine hell'
Instrumental break (ah-ah etc..)

Verse 3
So she hit the road in a timeless zone
Of open country, wide open skies
She met some travellers along the way
Eager to build a new and better day
'and though it grieves me to leave you behind
I've got to break the rules that quietly stole my mind'
Chorus 3:
'Yes I've got to run run free (free)
Just like Thelma and Louise
No choice but to rebel
to rebel or face an urban routine hell' x2

I don't like strict musical categories. I want a fairer peaceful world. I get stage nerves. I play Javanese gamelan and Sundanese zither. The photo on my profile was taken in 2006. I am doing a PhD in Ethnomusicology.
